Hudson Valley Senior Associate Attorney
Senior Associate Heather M. Abissi obtained her Bachelor’s Degree,
with a major in Psychology and minor in English, in 2001 from Roosevelt
University, her Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Argosy
University in 2003, and she graduated from Hofstra University: School
of Law in 2006. Ms. Abissi is admitted to practice law in Illinois, and
New York state courts as well as the federal courts in the United States
District Courts for the Southern, Western, and Northern District of New
York, and in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
Since graduating in 2006, Ms. Abissi has served as a Staff Attorney for
the New York Prosecutors Training Institute, an Assistant District Attorney
for the Putnam County District Attorney’s Office, and an Assistant
Counsel/Assistant Special Prosecutor for the NYS Justice Center for the
Protection of People with Special Needs. In 2015, she returned to Putnam
County to serve as the Executive Assistant District Attorney for the Putnam
County District Attorney’s Office.
When an election unseated her District Attorney, Ms. Abissi joined Sussman
& Associates in January of 2016, where she handled cases in the United
States District Courts for the Southern, Western, and Northern District
of New York, as well as in NYS Supreme, County, and Family Courts. Those
cases included federal and state criminal cases, tort cases, and family
court cases, in addition to civil rights litigation.
In March of 2017, Ms. Abissi joined Michael R. Varble & Associates,
PC, bringing almost a decade’s worth of prosecutorial insight to
work for misdemeanor, felony, and appellate criminal defense clients.
Ms. Abissi also brings her clinical insight as a therapist to help support
clients through the difficult process of tort, divorce and family court
In her free time, Ms. Abissi enjoys participating in Crossfit exercise,
and recently competed in the Crossfit Open for the first time this year.
