Attorney Michael Varble to Seek Civil Suit Against Town of Beekman Comptroller

Attorney Michael Varble – Partner at Michael R. Varble & Associates, P.C. – recently stepped forward to discuss the recent fraud scandal involving the Town of Beekman and Fred Knapp. Knapp – who is the former comptroller for the Town of Beekman is accused of stealing nearly $400,000 from public funds. Knapp was arrested on May 23rd and charged with second-degree larceny. He could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

According to Attorney Varble – who is also Town Attorney for the Town of Beekman – Knapp was using the town's checking account to make payments on a credit card he, his wife, and his daughter used for personal expenses. Knapp was able to continue his fraudulent scheme by writing checks under $10,000, which would require only his signature. In total, Knapp is alleged to have written a number of checks valued at roughly $390,000.

As Knapp begins criminal court proceedings, Attorney Varble has expressed his intent to pursue a civil lawsuit in order to recover money Knapp stole. Just as he advocates aggressively on behalf of our firm's clients and fights to obtain fair compensation for injured victims and families throughout the Hudson Valley, he plans to do whatever necessary to ensure that justice is served on behalf of the Town of Beekman.
