Michael R. Varble, Esq. and our team are proud to announce that it has
been successful in recovering a majority of the money stolen from the
Town of Beekman following a comptroller scandal. Of the half million dollars
stolen from the town, our team was able to recover $440,000.
Poughkeepsie Journal reports, former Beekman comptroller Fred Knapp pleaded guilty to the theft
of approximately $539,000 of taxpayer money earlier this year. The theft
was discovered after his tenure of comptroller when Beekman bookkeeper
Bill Bradley discovered major discrepancies in the town's financial
records. It was found that Knapp used the money for personal expenses,
including credit card payments and international travel. He is currently
serving three to nine years in prison.
Since the scandal, Michael R. Varble, Esq. has been instrumental to negotiating
with insurance companies to recover the lost funds. "We began the
recovery process months ago and are pleased with the swift response and
magnificent results," Town Supervisor Barbara Zulauf told the press,
"We are not done pursuing the remaining balance and await the mutual
decision of the involved insurance companies to determine their responsible
For the Good of Beekman
The responsive results our firm was able to provide does not just mean
that Beekman gets lost funds back, it also means that they can continue
to stay in good standing with creditors. Before the town could suffer
from a downgrading from Moody's or incur other credit consequences,
it already had enough recovered funds to continue to run efficiently and
plan for other financial goals.
"Fortunately, we probably eluded a downgrade by Moody’s by being
able to collect on the claim so quickly," said Andrew Forman, Beekman's
current comptroller. He added that the recovery of the insurance money
"makes the rating agencies comfortable with our high-quality rating."
We congratulate Michael R. Varble, Esq. and his team for their tremendous
success in service of the Town of Beekman. The results in this case are
just another testament to the thorough, responsive work our firm is capable
of for clients in need.
