"I mean, how do you know who your daddy is? Because your mama told
you so?" This line from "JFK" used to be the only way to
know who your daddy is, but not anymore. Anyone living in New York City
that wants a
paternity test can stand on the corner and use their cab hailing skills to flag
down the DNA van. With a prescription from a doctor, DNA samples can be
taken and sent off to a laboratory. Results can be back in as little as
three to five business days.
For a minimum cost of $299, the mobile lab owned and operated by Health
Street is helping families either confirm or deny paternity. The New York
based company is not the first to have a mobile lab, but it is the first
to plaster its purpose as part of the paint job. Health Street and its
mobile lab are accredited by the AABB, formerly known as the American
Association of Blood Banks, so results are potentially admissible in court.
Experts say that the number of private citizens requesting not only paternity
testing, but testing for all kinds of relationships is increasing. In
today's society, more and more women are raising children on their
own, and more and more children and fathers want confirmation of paternity.
It's not always about child support either. Some people just want
to know for sure whether they are related. However, those seeking confirmation
of paternity should be forewarned since the results aren't always
what people expect.
Once the issue of paternity is resolved, a new set of questions arises.
New York law provides guidelines for issues of child support, child custody
and visitation. Working out an agreement covering these issues may require
the advice and assistance of a professional.
