New York man with school board job faces criticism for unpaid child support

Child support is often an issue that many people would hope could be resolved behind closed doors. Unfortunately, if you are serving in a very public job, word can easily get out when there is an issue of child support in New York. As one member of a school board in New York found out this week, publicity of child support issues can definitely have an impact on a person's work.

The man's ex-wife supposedly contacted the school board that he was elected to and a local newspaper to tell them about his missed child support payments. According to a report the man allegedly didn't pay nearly $67,000 in child support over the past several years. This can be detrimental to a person's reputation, as well as the wellbeing of the child.

While sometimes people think that publicity will help get a person to make support payments, it can also hurt the child by being exposed to this publicity. The man told the newspaper that he will make good on his promises, and the wife told the paper that she didn't think he was fit to serve on the school board.

Whatever happens with his position on the school board, it can be important to consult with an attorney before speaking about child support issues with an ex-spouses employer or a newspaper. Child support can often be necessary to ensure the child has a proper upbringing, but resolving a child support issue can be very sensitive, so it is important to seek the help of an attorney with experience to deal with child support issues.
